Clean Harbors fined by MOE

A Corunna hazardous waste facility has been fined for violating the Environmental Protection Act.

Ontario's Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks said Clean Harbors Canada Inc. was convicted on October 16, 2024 for offences dating back to the spring of 2021.

The ministry said Clean Harbors failed to conduct geotechnical monitoring during the excavation of a waste-holding basin, and was not in compliance with a ministry approval.

The incident occurred on or about April 28, 2021, ending around August 18, 2021 during the construction of additional below-grade waste-holding basins or cells at the facility.

During the course of an investigation, the ministry discovered heave gauges and pneumatic piezometers, required as part of geotechnical monitoring, had not been installed during construction.

Clean Harbors was given 90 days to pay a $100,000 fine, plus a victim fine surcharge of $25,000.

Clean Harbors Canada Inc. provides environmental, energy, industrial and waste management services across Canada.
