Actor Adam West, known for generations as the Caped Crusader on television, has died.
West's family, and one of his representatives confirmed that the actor died of leukemia Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 88.
With a career that spanned seven decades, West is best known for his portrayal of Batman in a 1966 feature film and an ABC-TV series.
West was paired with Burt Ward as Robin. In a statement, Ward says he is "devastated" by the loss of his co-star and "lifelong friend".
Born William West Anderson in Washington state, West moved to Seattle as a teenager and served in the U.S. Army. He began his career after his discharge by hosting a children's TV show in Hawaii. Choosing the stage name Adam West, he began working in Hollywood on films and television.
West reported beat out Lyle Waggoner for the role of Batman. The film and TV series were a surprise hit. The TV show was best known for its catchy theme music, colourful presentation style and campy humour. It was nominated for three Emmy Awards in 1966, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
The novelty of the TV show soon wore off and ABC cancelled it after the 1967-68 season. NBC had agreed to pick up the show for the following season but the show's sets had already been destroyed.
After "Batman", West continued to appear in films and on television, though he was often typecast. Late in his life, he often appeared as himself on numerous TV series and did voice work for shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama and others.
