A well known Michigan powerboat racer died in a crash late Sunday afternoon during the St. Clair River Classic offshore powerboat event.
The St. Clair County Sheriff's office posted a news release Monday saying a collision occurred at the northwest turn of the race involving the 40 ft American Ethanol Cat Can Do and the 50 ft Miss GEICO from Florida.
The Sheriff's Office says the throttleman of Cat Can Do, Keith Holmes died from injuries sustained in the crash, while driver Jamie Sartin, was hospitalized for non life-threatening injuries.
The incident happened around 5:30pm in the river between Courtright and Mooretown on the Canadian side.
The other racers involved suffered minor injuries.
Both boats were removed from the water and taken away so investigators can begin to piece together what went wrong.
The racing event was abruptly ended following the crash.
