Sarnia council has agreed to consider plans for expansion of the London Rd. medical clinic.
The owners of 481 London Rd. and adjoining lands are proposing a family medical centre project that would need an official plan amendment and rezoning.
The plans include demolition of two homes on the south side of London Rd. between the existing clinic parking lot and the apartment complex at London Rd. and East St. for additional parking.
City Councillor Anne Marie Gillis agrees the expanded medical centre is urgently needed as aging Sarnia doctors retire and new young doctors are looking for modern group-practice facilities.
"I certainly appreciate the fact that Dr. Michael O'Mahony is retiring and Dr. John O'Mahony is going to be working to take over his practice," says Gillis. "It seemed to me in his outline of what he's looking to do, what young physicians are looking for, clearly the way that we have things set up here in the city is not compelling for them to come."
The $3-million project, that still has to be approved by council, would provide space for the practices of retiring physicians.
The project has been endorsed by the Physician Recruitment Taskforce, the Rapids Family Health Team and MPP Bob Bailey.
