Sarnia Police have created a partnership geared toward those living with dementia.
Police held a registry on Saturday, which collected information on people with dementia in the event they should go lost or missing. The initiative is in partnership with the Alzheimer's Society of Sarnia-Lambton.
About 16 people participated in the registry with their caregivers, according to a release from Inspector Jeff Hodgson of the Sarnia Police Community Response Division. Officers use the information gathered to help the families of any individual with dementia who goes missing or gets lost.
It is estimated that three out of every five people with dementia will go missing or lost at least once in their lifetime, and if they are not located within 24 hours, half of them may die or suffer a serious injury.
Sarnia Police thank the Alzheimer's Society for their assistance. Another registry event is in the works for the fall.
