St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Bank in Sarnia has three weeks worth of summer snacks on its shelves, thanks to a donation from the Vrolyk sisters.
The contribution from Paige, Abby and Sydney, who attend St. Patrick's High School, was the result of a fundraising campaign launched earlier this year to fill shelves once nutritional programs wrapped up for the school year.
"During the school year there's programs, like breakfast clubs, but in the summer those programs are gone and hunger doesn't take a vacation," Paige said. "We wanted to feed those kids in the summer, because it's just as important. Snacks can be seen as a luxury item and that's really sad because they shouldn't be."
The sisters, who say they love participating in Irish Miracle and Cyclone Aid, launched their "Snacks for Summer" program after recognizing the specific need.
Sarnia police Chief Norm Hansen says it's always encouraging when you catch kids doing something good, rather than anything negative.
"I heard about these young ladies doing this and they're doing such a great job that we got behind it and actually our police association made the first donation," Hansen said. "This is something that Sarnia police encourage 100%."
The sisters plan to drop off more snacks this summer and are still working toward their new $7,800 fundraising goal, which was increased from $5,000 because of further need.
Monetary donations to "Snacks for Summer" can be dropped off at Redeemer Christian reform Church and Sarnia Police Headquarters.
