Sarnia Teacher Wins Anti-Bias Award

A Lambton-Kent teacher has won the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) 2018 Anti-Bias Award.

Emily Fortney-Blunt is a Grade 7-8 teacher at Lakeroad Public School.

She begins the school year by having students take part in learning circles, see others as part of the community, and break down stereotypes or racist views through inquiry and curiosity rather than judgement.

ETFO President Sam Hammond says Fortney-Blunt provides students with the opportunity to listen to one another.

“What’s exciting is that Emily has embedded a focus on global citizenship and social justice across the curriculum in all subjects,” says Hammond. “Her work embodies the social justice principles that our members are teaching to ensure that public elementary students value inclusive and supportive classrooms and communities.”

Fortney-Blunt's work extended beyond her school. She has coordinated the Lambton College Global Citizenship Summit to promote global citizenship and diversity in Sarnia-Lambton.
