City to look at snipping red tape

City staff will spend the next several months investigating how to reduce red tape.

Sarnia council supported the motion from Councillor Bill Dennis to report back in six to nine months with options on how to make the city more efficient and effective for businesses and citizens.

Councillor Brian White was all for it.

"I think there's opportunity to grow together and to learn together and in particular with new staff, this could be an exercise in reviewing our current practices and ways to improve," said White.

White said a tremendous amount of work has already taken place in the planning and building department over the last four years.

"I'm hearing, as I'm sure others are, from the development community that we've still got a ways to go to make things easier, to expedite the processes and I think this is an excellent opportunity to investigate those. Not only in that department but across the board," he said.

Council has asked staff to self-audit key departments, seek public input and ask the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce for input from their membership.
