Councillor encouraged about Cull Drain Bridge future

Rejuvenated interest in the Cull Drain Bridge may lead to action sooner, rather than later.

The historic trusses have been sitting in Mike Weir Park since the bridge was dismantled and removed in November 2014.

Councillor George Vandenberg said Monday that he visited the site over the weekend, then made some calls and has had an encouraging response from local union members.

"There seems to be a lot of interest, I'm hoping, I'm keeping my fingers crossed," said Vandenberg, who wasn't ready to share details just yet.

Council supported his request to table discussions.

"I'm receiving information back that may assist us in that regard. I'm simply asking council to defer the matter to April 15," said Vandenberg.

A motion asking staff to report back with an update on the project will be discussed at that time.

In a presentation to council, Friends of the Cull Drain Bridge member Steve Loxton said the group is ready to participate in any initiative toward preservation or reuse of the bridge, but ultimately, he said, the city is in control of what happens.
