The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride is coming to the Brigden Fairgrounds this week.
Cst. Kyle Hoople says 28 riders and their horses will put on the show, which demands control, timing and coordination, on July 10.
"We do a variety of intricate figures and cavalry drills and choreograph it to music," said Hoople. "All of us on the ride, we're all police officers and we're assigned to the musical ride on a voluntary basis."
Hoople said their training process is lengthy.
"To start off there is a five-week tryout," he said. "So, anyone interested in joining the Musical Ride will come to that five weeks of training and right away you're on a horse and learning how to ride. Myself, I never had any experience riding horses before so that five-week course is very challenging and you're learning a lot in a short amount of time."
He said if an officer passes that course and is recommended to join the ride, they're transferred to Ottawa to do another six months of continuous training, followed by about four months of training routines before the summer tour begins.
Hoople said they ride Hanoverian horses from a breeding facility near Ottawa.
Showtimes are 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. Children 12 and under are free.
