New Year's revellers encouraged to plan ahead

Motorists should expect to see a stepped-up police presence on Sarnia streets this New Year's Eve.

Cst. John Sottosanti said police want to ensure everyone has a safe and happy New Year's and will be conducting ride checkpoints.

He said if you're going out and will be drinking, to plan ahead.

"Unfortunately people go out they have that first drink than that second and third, and their intent may have been to stop drinking or get a ride but they don't," said Sottosanti. "You get that liquid courage into you and all of sudden it's I can drive, don't worry I'm o.k, I'll do it no problem. Well, once you get behind that wheel the world is changed for you."

Lambton OPP will also be conducting ride checkpoints throughout the county.

Consequences for drinking and driving include vehicle impoundment, suspended licenses, fines and jail time.

Sarnia Transit is offering free service from 6:15 p.m. December 31 until 2:45 a.m January 1.

Buses will stay off the road on New Years Day.
