Sarnia council briefs - March 2

Sarnia council has asked staff to continue a water filter rebate program.

The program is limited to properties within the city's "lead zone" that have had a sample done and exceeded the lead limit.

As part of the Lead Reduction Program, the city offers a one year rebate on lead filters if levels are exceeded.

Of the 40 properties that exceeded the limit in 2019, only two participated in the rebate program.

The 14th annual event is being planned for July 31 to August 2.

Sarnia council has approved a recommendation to consolidate capital reserves.

The more simplified accounting system will help repay the city's loans faster.

Sarnia council hasn't decided a parking strategy for 2 Ferry Dock Hill yet.

Staff have recommended two options; offer free parking or install a pay and display machine to operate weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Council tabled the discussion after new information came to light.

Council also shelved discussion on a one year pilot project allowing a dog friendly beach.

Staff said "the cove" at the extreme west end of Canatara Park was one location to consider.

The suggestion received a lot of criticism over social media, so council has asked staff for more public consultation.

They're expected to report back with other location options in April.
