CBSA reports cocaine seizures at Blue Water, Queenston-Lewiston bridges

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reporting two major cocaine seizures recently, including one at the Blue Water Bridge on April 15.

The CBSA said Thursday that a male truck driver crossing at Point Edward was referred for a secondary inspection.

Officers conducted a search and allegedly discovered suspected cocaine weighing about 19 kilograms and valued at around $3 million.

The driver was arrested and both he and the evidence were turned over to the RCMP's London Detachment.

On August 18, a lone male hauling a tractor trailer was sent to secondary at Niagara's Queenston-Lewiston Bridge.

During the examination, CBSA officers allegedly located 104 packages of suspected cocaine, totalling 117 kilograms, concealed within the commercial load.

The value of the goods is estimated at $14 million.

The driver and the evidence were turned over to the RCMP's Hamilton Niagara Detachment.

Both investigations are ongoing.

CBSA Regional Director General Christine Durocher commended the work of officers to keep Canada safe.

"These cocaine seizures demonstrate that our officers remain vigilant and committed to ensuring that our borders are not used for illegal activity while travel restrictions at the border continue," said Durocher. "I am proud of the outstanding work of officers in the Southern Ontario Region who prevented this significant quantity of suspected illegal drugs from entering Canada. The CBSA and the RCMP work together to prevent illegal drug smuggling that threatens the safety of our communities."

The CBSA said from January 1, 2019, to August 31, 2020, approximately 600 kilograms of suspected cocaine was seized at ports of entry in the Southern Ontario Region.
