Human remains found at Watford landfill

A York Region homicide investigation has led officers to Watford after the remains of a body were recovered at Twin Creeks Landfill and Environmental Center.

York Region police were investigating the disappearance of a Markham couple. Police said Quoc Tran and Kristy Nguyen were victims of a targeted attack in Vaughn. The pair was last seen on September 18 at around 5:30 p.m.

Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit recently recovered the remains of one body at the Watford landfill, located on Nauvoo Road, and efforts continue to recover a second body which is believed to be at the same location.

Thanks to tips from the public, York Region investigators said a 36-year-old suspect, Recaldo Liburd of Vaughn, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of Accessory After the Fact of Murder. He is scheduled to appear at the Newmarket Superior Court of Justice on October 14.

A Canada-wide arrest warrant remains in effect for 35-year-old Phuong Tan Nguyen of Toronto, who also goes by the name Mike. He is wanted on two counts of First Degree Murder. Police are asking people not to approach Nguyen if he is seen but to instead call 911 immediately. He is considered armed and dangerous.
