Supply chain issues delay track completion at Great Lakes

Supply chain issues further delayed the completion of the new track at Great Lakes Secondary School this fall.

Lambton Kent District School Board Superintendent of Business Brian McKay said the track and turf will hopefully be completed in the spring.

"The rubberized surface still has to be put down on the track area," said McKay. "That's the biggest item for the track itself and then the artificial turf, kind of in the infield of the track itself, that's the other big item that will go down, is the turf surface itself."

The turf, McKay said, has yet to arrive.

"We'll have it in time for the spring, but we were hoping to have it in time for the fall and get that down. The supply chain has just been nasty. Very difficult to predict. So we weren't able to get that down in time."

McKay said mother nature will help determine when work commences in the spring.

"It's all of course weather dependent. How wet of a spring that we have. It would be our hope that with good cooperation weather wise we can get it done in a few months, hopefully April and May in the spring."

The state-of-the-art, eight-lane track, will replace the one previously used by the community near the former St. Patrick's High School site on East Street.

Public use of the track ended in the fall to make way for construction of Bluewater Health's future helipad.

Demolition of the former track is expected to start in the spring of 2022.
