Students at St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Corunna are making their radio debuts.
A total of 19 children have written and recorded positive, uplifting messages that are being aired on Blackburn Media in Sarnia.
Grade 7/8 teacher Daniel Cicchelli said the students have explored various ways to support their own mental health, while looking to inspire others to keep positive throughout the year.
"My classroom, and Eric Babcock's classroom, here in the school naturally just said 'hey, how can we look to support others,'" said Cicchelli. "Not even just students, but community members, seniors, adults, people looking for that positive message on a day-to-day basis."
He said it's been really great to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
"We always tell our kids, 'to whom much is given, much will be required,' and what that necessarily means is that we have a lot to be thankful for. Our kids have a lot of talent, so they know that they can use those talents to benefit others and that's a way that we can maybe support other people's mental wellbeing during this strenuous time in our society."
Cicchelli said it was a real team effort.
"There was a lot of excitement around it and even for those students who weren't necessarily saying, 'I want to get on the radio and have my voice on the radio,' there was also a lot of excitement with students who were helping create the messages. I think that's really where it was a great team environment and where both classes were working together to create those messages."
