Overwhelming majority of county council opposes Strong Mayors Bill

The mayor of Lambton Shores says Ontario's proposed Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act, would take the province down the wrong path.

Bill Weber presented a motion to Lambton County Council Wednesday morning, that the county send a letter of opposition to the provincial government.

"I think this is the ending of democracy, one person one vote is the way it's always been," said Weber. "I have not seen the evidence of how having strong mayor is going to build more homes. I think each council wants to get housing on the line, and go forward."

Weber's motion will see a letter addressed to local MPP's, Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark.

"And I don't think a mayor should have the opportunity to hire and fire CAO's or others, and I know that this is only for the City of Toronto and Ottawa, but I have heard that it's been expressed that lots of other cities and municipalities would like to have the same opportunity."

County council approved Weber's motion in a recorded vote. Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley was the only one to vote against it.

Bill 3, which remains before the provincial parliament for debate, aims to provide additional powers to the mayors of Toronto and Ottawa. However, the bill does also contemplate additional powers to heads of council in other municipalities in the future.
