Sarnia-Lambton residents are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Friday, as several events are planned in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
September 30th is a federal statutory holiday, first observed in 2021. The day honours residential schools survivors and those who never returned home.
The Sarnia-Lambton Native Friendship Centre said a flag-raising ceremony will be held Friday morning at Paul Blundy Park, at the bottom of Lochiel Street, at 8:45 a.m.
Attendees will then make their way to Veterans Park behind drummers, singers, and dancers. Guest speakers will later say a few works at Sarnia City Hall at 10 a.m.
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) Committee will also unveil a commemorative crosswalk at the intersection of Front and Lochiel Streets. The unveiling is scheduled to begin at 11:30 p.m.
Sarnia's first commemorative crosswalk was unveiled in June, at the intersection of Christina Street North and Cathcart Boulevard.
Corporations will also mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On Friday, Tim Hortons will donate 100 per cent of its proceeds from orange sprinkle donuts to Indigenous organizations.
