The Sarnia Sting cruised to a 6-3 victory in the hockey club's season opener in Kitchener Friday night.
Marcus Limpar-Lantz had a goal and two assists in his Sting debut, Ty Voit also had a goal and two helpers and goaltender Ben Gaudreau made 17 saves in the win.
After a scoreless first period, Sarnia's Easton Wainwright broke the deadlock about seven minutes into the second. Rangers forward Adam Zidlicky evened the score a couple minutes later, but the Sting ended the middle frame with a pair of late goals from Tyson Doucette and Angus MacDonell.
Voit and Nolan Burke made it 5-1 with two quick goals about five minutes into the third period and Limpar-Lantz added an insurance marker at 8:29. The Rangers scored two goals in the final minute-and-a-half to make the final 6-3.
Sting Assistant Coach Mike Haley said they were pretty happy with the game.
"Obviously the last two goals were not ideal. I think, was it 54 minutes was about as solid as we could get, so we'll be happy with that, quick turnaround here, and hopefully have the same effort in Windsor [Saturday night]."
Sting 2022 first round pick Porter Martone had an assist in his OHL debut. Third round pick Carson Campbell also saw his first OHL action on defence.
The Sting outshot the Rangers 33-20 from the Memorial Auditorium, a building where Sarnia went 1-3 last season and were outscored 22-8.
Haley said it'll be the same game plan Saturday night in Windsor.
"Beginning of the season here we're really trying to implement the way that we want to play. So, I think the guys did a great job tonight, it was a great step forward and it's going to be a good game Saturday. It's going to be a good test, especially for some of our new kids, to get a good taste of OHL hockey here where it's a quick turnaround and back to back games."
The Sting also opened up last season with a 6-3 road win -- that victory game in Windsor.
