Spike in drug-related deaths prompts alert from Lambton Public Health

A spike in suspected drug-related deaths locally has prompted an alert from Lambton Public Health.

The public health unit issued an advisory late Friday night after recent reports of an increase in drug-related deaths.

Caregivers and those who may use street drugs are being reminded to not mix them with alcohol or other drugs, to not use them alone, know the signs of an opioid overdose, and to carry a Naloxone kit.

Signs of an opioid overdose include:

-Difficulty walking, talking, or staying awake

-Blue or grey lips and nails

-Very small pupils

-Cold and clammy skin

-Dizziness and confusion

-Extreme drowsiness

-Choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds

-Slow, weak, or no breathing

-Inability to wake up

Free Naloxone kits are available at Lambton Public Health, local pharmacies, and several agencies including Community Health Centres.

In the event of an overdose, residents are being urged to call 911 and stay at the scene to provide information, administer Naloxone, and that you're protected under the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act.
