Provincial Green Party candidate still needed in Sarnia-Lambton

The Sarnia-Lambton Green Party is still seeking a candidate to run in the provincial election June 2.

President Kevin Shaw, who was the candidate in the 2014 and 2018 elections, said they'd really like someone new to push the Green Party message and make sure it's represented for people who want to vote that way.

"I'm almost 50 now, I think we're looking for someone that's younger that has, ideally, a passion for what the Green Party stands for," said Shaw. "That's social issues, along with the environment, small businesses, cares about healthcare and education and balancing all those things out. It doesn't matter if it's someone with political experience or not, but someone obviously with some sort of community profile makes a big difference in elections."

Shaw said the sooner someone comes forward, the better.

"It takes a couple of weeks for candidates to be vetted and everything, so by the end of April for sure we'd want everything to be ready to go. So that gives a little bit of time to get the campaign organized."

He said if more than one candidate comes forward, local members will vote to determine whose name is on the ballot.

"I think it's really important for there to be different options available for voters on election day. It is a rewarding experience, you get to meet a lot of people and it's something that makes you grow as a person. So, hopefully people will consider it."

Shaw said there are a few ways folks can put their name forward.

"If someone is interested, there's a couple of things they can do. They can email me, kevinshaw@gpo.ca or they can go to the Green Party of Ontario website and there will be a link there for people to express their interest in becoming a candidate and that gets the ball rolling."

Sarnia-Lambton Progressive Conservative MPP Bob Bailey has been nominated to run again in June.

The New Blue Party will be represented by Keith Benn, a former geology professor from Port Lambton.

A candidate has yet to be declared in Sarnia-Lambton for the Liberals and New Democratic Party (NDP).
