Race for mayor of Brooke-Alvinston

There's a race to become mayor of Brooke-Alvinston.

Jamie Armstrong has filed his nomination papers and is the only candidate challenging incumbent mayor Dave Ferguson so far.

Armstrong, who is rounding out his first term on council, said he wants to "turn the tables" on the direction the municipality is going.

"Currently, demographics are showing that we are an aging community and I'd like to see if we couldn't turn the tables on that and start revitalizing the community, and keep our schools vibrant, and keep the arena vibrant and maybe do some sprucing up of the downtown of Alvinston and make use of the beautiful countryside that we have nearby," said Armstrong.

The 60-year-old operations coordinator at Suncor's Sarnia Refinery said the timing is good because he's planning to retire at the end of March, 2023.

"Last election, I was going to have to work for another four years and I wasn't going to be able to put the energy into the mayor's position to do the job the way it should be done. If I'm fully retired, I can direct my focus on the community."

Armstrong lived in the area his entire life, and while his home address is about a mile outside of the municipality, he and his wife own a business in Alvinston and he's a member of many organizations.

"I've been part of the Alvinston Optimist Club, I'm the building committee chair, I'm on the Alvinston Pro-Rodeo, I'm on the Alvinston Fair Board, so I'm really involved in all the volunteer organizations that currently exist in Alvinston."

Armstrong said he'd really like to see the relationship between community groups and the municipality repaired and grow.

He said he was really concerned to see the community centre and fire department in Inwood closed this past term.

Armstrong has been married for 25 years and has five children, three grandchildren and another on the way.

"Two of my grandchildren live in Brooke-Alvinston, so that's why I'm looking to try and reinvigorate what's happening in Alvinston and bring the young people back, because we have to sustain the community and hopefully keep our school open."

Armstrong said attracting younger people and building some new subdivisions would help keep the arena and parks to modern standards.

Incumbent mayor Dave Ferguson was elected in 2018, replacing Don McGugan who retired from the post after being mayor for 16 years.

The eastern Lambton County municipality has about 2,400 residents.
