One month after a fire forced 120 residents out of their homes, Fairwinds Lodge officials have announced plans to rebuild.
In an email to Sarnia News Today, Sienna Senior Living, the facility's management company, said all residents have found new accommodations, and the majority of suites have been packed and moved.
"As a result, we can now turn our attention to the next steps for the home," said Senior Manager Media Relations and Communications Nadia Daniell-Colarossi in the statement. "Sabra Health Care REIT, the owners of Fairwinds Lodge, and the Sienna Senior Living management team are committed to ensuring Fairwinds Lodge remains a vibrant part of the Sarnia community. We will be rebuilding and are working with external engineers and architects to determine the best way to move forward."
Daniell-Colarossi said the Michigan Road retirement home will remain closed during construction, and a timeline has yet to be determined.
"However, when we do, residents who lived at Fairwinds before the fire will be given priority to move back if they choose. We have communicated with residents that we will stay in touch and provide updates about the reconstruction. Being a part of the incredible community in Sarnia is a source of pride, and we are grateful for the many partnerships we have throughout the city.”
No injuries were reported in the January 15 blaze, and the cause has been deemed accidental following an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.
