Needs study approved for SPS Headquarters

A study into the immediate and future needs of Sarnia Police Headquarters has been given the go ahead.

The police services board approved an independent needs study with the objective of developing a facilities master plan.

The facility at 555 Christina Street North opened in 1987 prior to the amalgamation with Clearwater Township in 1990.

Police Chief Derek Davis says as the building continues to age, maintenance costs are expected to increase, including windows, a broken elevator, security requirements and weapons storage.

The independent needs study is expected to cost $38,000.

The police board also approved a recommendation to request Sarnia council form a project team with the police service to explore options for the sustainable provision of police facilities, pursuant to the Police Services Act.
