A soggy July recorded in Sarnia

Sarnia-Lambton saw a lot more rain than usual in July.

A total of 168 millimetres of rain fell last month according to Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Peter Kimbell.

He said that's more than double the average rainfall of 79 mm for July.

Kimbell said in fact, Sarnia-Lambton was one of the wettest areas in eastern Canada.

"There were three zones, three bullseyes of way above average precipitation," said Kimbell. "One would be Nova Scotia, the eastern half of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The second one would be southern Quebec, so Montreal, Trois-Rivières, the eastern townships of Quebec and the third one would be southwestern Ontario, in particular Sarnia and Lambton County."

Kimbell said despite the above normal rainfall, we did not set a new record.

"In 1896 there was 192 millimetres reported in Sarnia in the month of July," he said. "So Sarnia basically did receive a lot of rainfall, 168 mm, not a record but definitely way above average."

Kimbell said the biggest rainfall day last month was July 12th, with 42 mm of rain recorded at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport.
