Front Street rehabilitation project to start Monday

A busy Sarnia intersection will be shut down next week for a few days to allow for rehabilitation.

County of Lambton Construction Supervisor Glen Hamill said Cope Construction was awarded the project.

"Front Street will be closed for three days at the London Road intersection, for the resurfacing, sidewalk panels and some curb work," said Hamill. "Once that one is open, we'll be closing the section from the north side of the crosswalk to the south side of Exmouth Street for extensive recycling and paving."

Railway crossing improvements are also planned prior to paving.

Hamill said the work was scheduled to coordinate around downtown events.

"We wanted to go as late as we could with the recycling, but not too late, because we have to get it done before September 1. There were events going on and we wanted to make sure we weren't conflicting with all of those, so we waited for the last few weeks of August to get our closure," he said.

Hamill said detours will be in place while the work is completed.

"We're going to have access to the Centennial Park parking lot via. Nelson Street. So, anybody that wants to go into the park can go into that parking lot through Nelson. The only time that it will be closed is during the day when they're working adjacent to the entrance," Hamill said.

While no through traffic will be permitted for the duration of the project, he said businesses will remain open in the area and crews will be working to make sure customers can get to where they need to go.

"The closure will be from August 14-16 at the intersection and the other section to the north will be from about the 17 until late September," Hamill said.

He believes the stretch was last resurfaced in 2009, but it was only a mill and pave, and meant to be a five to seven year fix.
