Impaired driver sentenced in double fatal crash with cyclists

The driver in a fatal crash last summer on Walpole Island First Nation will serve six years behind bars.

Justice Mark Poland sentenced Delsin Wade Johnson-Shipman in the Ontario Court of Justice to six years in prison in connection to the June 22, 2022 crash that killed two women out for an early morning bike ride.

Michelle White, 36, and Gretta Williams, 50, both of Walpole Island First Nation, were struck by a vehicle while biking along River Road. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Johnson-Shipman, who was 22-years-old at the time of the crash, was arrested over two months later and charged with two counts each of operation of a vehicle while impaired causing death and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

In April, Johnson-Shipman pleaded guilty two counts of impaired driving causing death.
