Sarnia Transit adding routes, combining others ahead of new school year

Sarnia Transit is rolling out a buffet of changes starting Tuesday, September 5.

Manager Michelle Carter said they include new routes and the retirement of others, the combination of some routes and increased service for more popular trips.

Carter said when they confirmed the location for their new Wellington Street bus terminal, they really started planning and taking a detailed look at all of their routes and ridership.

"We performed passenger surveys, collected operator feedback, and worked with our transit advisory committee to really look at how we can improve service," she said. "So, covering areas that we don't normally cover, or the areas that have a higher ridership, how we can improve that service or increase it in those areas."

Some of the changes include a morning and afternoon north-end express route, a weekday Confederation-Wellington route, a weekday London Road express, and a college express. For more details, click here.

Carter said the college express will help accommodate the really big increase in college students the service has seen in 2023.

"This year, so far, we've had 456,000 college students travelling on transit," she said. "So, compared to our general overall ridership, they are 65 per cent of this year's ridership."

At this time in 2022, around 198,000 college students had used the bus, based on semester bus passes.

By year's end, college students had taken the bus around 430,000 times.
