Sarnia's Front Street now open

Front Street (County Road 33) has reopened to traffic between London Road and Exmouth Street in downtown Sarnia.

The road restoration project stared in August.

"It was a recycle and pave project, with improvements to the railway crossings and the addition of two bike lanes on each side of the road," said County of Lambton Construction Supervisor Glen Hamill.

He said construction crews will still be in the area over the next few weeks to finalize the project, in terms of new signs and restoration behind the curbs. However, traffic will still flow during this time.

"We appreciate everyone's patience with the road being closed and the businesses in the area," said Hamill. "[We're] happy to get it open again."

The project was delayed by about one week as officials had hoped to see the roadway reopened on September 29.

"Rain held us up a little bit for our wanted completion date but we're slightly under budget," Hamill said.

The total cost of the project is still being worked out but Hamill said they had budgeted for $1.2 million.

The project was awarded to Cope Construction.
