UPDATE: Oktoberfest celebration cancelled

An Oktoberfest celebration at the Sarnia Armouries has been cancelled.

The event, hosted by the Sarnia Junior Ranks Mess, was scheduled to take place October 7 from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 574 Confederation Street.

President of the Mess Committee Cpl. Buster Thiel said they were hoping to raise money for the Boots on the Beach campaign.

"Every year, the First Hussars cab fund puts together a project with the Westlake Brothers to send members over to Normandy, France for the celebration of D-Day that historically we participated in," he said. "So we're going to be raising money to allow more soldiers to get to go and experience that next year."

More than 14,000 Canadians were part of the D-Day offensive, 359 of whom were killed after they stormed the beaches on June 6, 1944.

Before the event was cancelled, Thiel said it was going to be their first Oktoberfest celebration.
