Sarnia residents face a property tax hike of just over 7.5 per cent heading into budget deliberations Tuesday.
City Treasurer Jane Qi will report a few amendments in the draft that originally called for an increase over eight per cent, before it's considered by Sarnia council.
She said staff had forecasted a seven per cent increase in 2024 insurance renewal costs, but the actual cost of premiums decreased just over eight percent compared to 2023 actuals. Nearly $550,000 in savings was realized.
Qi said staff also over estimated Sarnia's share of the 2024 St. Clair Region Conservation Authority budget, by nearly $2,500. Seven items, referred by council to budget deliberation or requested during the budget input and grants session, are outlined for consideration.
They included funding for a new management position, a showmobile, pickleball courts, traffic calming measures and the Bright's Grove Library expansion.
Should council wish to advance any of the items, a motion to amend the proposed budget is required. Budget deliberations get underway in council chambers at 9 a.m.
