Law firm seeks compensation after salmonella outbreak kills five

A London law firm is investigating the possibility of launching a class action suit over an outbreak of salmonella linked to Malichita and Ruby brand cantaloupes.

Siskinds LLP is seeking compensation for those who got sick, lost a loved one, or threw out cantaloupe after Public Health Canada issued a warning last week.

As of December 7, Public Health Canada was aware of 129 illnesses and five deaths connected to the outbreak. Forty-four people sought treatment for salmonella poisoning in the hospital. Most of those who got sick were under five or over 65.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued three food recall warnings between November 1 and November 17 for Malichita cantaloupe sold between October 11 and November 14. The recall was updated on November 24 to include Ruby cantaloupe sold between October 10 and November 24.

They were sold in six provinces, including Ontario, where 17 cases were confirmed.

There's also a recall for products processed alongside the cantaloupe, including honeydew melon, pineapple, watermelon, and fruit trays.

Symptoms, which include abdominal cramps, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, chills and fever, typically start six to 72 hours after exposure to Salmonella bacteria and usually last four to seven days. Those infected can spread the bacteria to others even if they don't have symptoms.

Anyone who ate or bought recalled cantaloupe can call Bridget Moran at Siskind LLC at 519-660-7842 or email bridget.moran@siskinds.com. Those who wish to receive updates on the possible class action can go online here.
