Canatara Park home to this year's Kids Funfest

Sarnia's Kids Funfest will return on Saturday, June 10 with a full day of activities but it will be held at a different venue, Canatara Park.

"We've had a really great opportunity to host the event over many years at Clearwater Park and it's been a great venue but we certainly have been eyeing Canatara Park for a little while now," said Community Services Coordinator for the City of Sarnia Rachel Veilleux.

From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., a wide range of activities will be available at the park for children under the age of 13.

Veilleux said part of the event has to do with bringing community organizations together to let parents and guardians know what is available in the community. An event guide (which will be handed out at the event and can be found online) will categorize the various organizations involved into different services.

"So we've got support services such as St. Clair Child and Youth, the Boys and Girls Club of Sarnia-Lambton; we've got educational services such as Math Plus Tutors [and] Sylvan Learning; programs and activities which are a little more sports-based or even club-based," Veilleux said.

However, since it is a 'funfest', each of the participating organizations will be responsible for providing interactive activities.

"They range from carnival games to fishing, to animals, archery, all kinds of activities for everybody to enjoy," said Veilleux.

Corporate trucks, such as a dump truck and a crane, will also be brought in for touch-a-truck. Crafts, lawn games, inflatables, and live entertainment, such as magic shows, will also take place during the day.

The City of Sarnia is once again competing in the national ParticipACTION Community Challenge so activity stations will be set up at the park.

During the month of June, residents can log their physical activity into an app and communities with the most time logged will have a chance to win $100,000 for activity-based programming.

"To help boost our physical activity minutes in the community, we are having three separate booths that will be tracking physical activity minutes at the event," Veilleux said. "The first is Raven Heart Yoga, who will be doing yoga demonstrations; the second is Coach Richel Fitness Instructor, she'll be doing fitness demonstrations; and then of course, we've also got miniature hockey games that attendees can participate in as well."

With the exception of food and beverage sales, the event is free.

A map of the event space along with a schedule can be found on the city's website.

The 25th annual Kids Funfest returned last year after a brief hiatus. In the past, the event saw about 3,000 attendees.
