Plans underway for Corunna Street Festival

A street festival marking Corunna's historical significance will return to Lyndoch Street in the fall.

The Corunna 200 planning committee approached St. Clair Township council in November with a request to hold the street festival again, on September 21, 2024.

The inaugural event was held in September to recognize Corunna's past, as 2023 marked 200 years since the area was surveyed as a possible site for Canada's capital.

Committee Chair Tracy Kingston said the event went over really well with requests from community members to hold another street festival in 2024. Kingston previously said roughly 1,000 people attended the event.

Corunna 200 festivities also came in under budget with an unofficial surplus of $19,542.

"There's still money from sponsorship that we have to use for this," Kingston said. "We all know how difficult fundraising is so we just thought... we have the funds now, we'll bring it in at least one more year."

Kingston said at this point, the committee is not expecting the street festival to become an annual event. It's also unknown if additional funds will be needed for the 2024 festival as it depends on what type of entertainment is booked.

"The entertainment is the most costly thing out of it all," she said. "The juggler runs about $1,500... we had a mermaid which went over very well, she was $500. It'll depend on the entertainment. We may ask for at least - possibly - one corporate sponsor but we should be able to work with the budget that we have."

The previous Corunna 200 Street Festival also included inflatables and local craft and artisan vendors. Kingston said although planning is in the early stages, the festival's layout and the format will be very similar to what was seen in September.

To accommodate for the event, Lyndoch Street will be closed between Fane Street and Cameron Street from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Kingston said the Corunna Street Festival will likely still use the Corunna 200 social media pages and website.
