Active Transportation Master Plan to be presented to city council

Sarnia City Council will soon see what is needed to get the community really moving.

The Active Transportation Master Plan, which both identifies current gaps in infrastructure and proposes walking and cycling networks in the community, will be presented to council on Monday.

Mayor Mike Bradley said there has been a lot of consultation into the plan, which has been in motion for quite some time.

"We see the benefits of people being out in the community," said Bradley. "And after we came out of COVID we saw the benefits of people recognizing the value of city parks and cycling and walking and doing all those things. So this just moves it forward, it gives this council and the future councils a plan that can be implemented to make us a much better community economically and socially."

Bradley said the plan includes proposals for more bike lanes, pedestrianized streets, intersection improvements and inclusive designs for sidewalks.

"There are more bike lanes proposed, there are more roundabouts proposed, there are more walking networks being proposed," said Bradley. "It's an integrated plan to connect all the things we need if we want to be active in our community as it relates to cycling, walking and other actions in the community that improve your own health."

City council meets in regular session on Monday at 1 p.m.
