Sarnia's retiring fire chief has been recognized for 37 years of service by the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM).
Fire Protection Advisor Joseph Krogman read a few words to Bryan Van Gaver, on behalf of Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg, at the beginning of Monday's council meeting.
"Your commitment to fire and life safety, and the leadership you have shown in your community, are sincerely appreciated," Krogman said.
Van Gaver made a brief comment afterward.
"I just wanted to say, it's been a very enjoyable and fulfilling career, and I'd just like to thank the community for allowing me to serve... thank you," said Van Gaver.
Mayor Mike Bradley said Chief Van Gaver's leadership has been appreciated and his legacy is leaving the city with a brand new fire hall on Colborne Road.
A grand opening was expected to take place early this year.
Although Van Gaver's retirement officially comes into effect March 31, former Cornwall Fire Chief Jeff Weber will take over on February 1.
The leadership will overlap to ensure a smooth transition.
