YMCA wants to continue programming at Camp Saredaca

The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario wants to run recreation programming at Camp Saredaca .

City council will consider a five-year proposal, from the organization that has offered summer camps to children at the site in recent years, on Monday.

Mayor Mike Bradley said only the one submission was received after a request for proposals was issued last fall.

"This is an organization that has worked with the city, going back to when their building was built, with the city supporting the pool so there would be public access to the pool without us taking on that cost," said Bradley. "Obviously in the last couple of years, they've also been running the program at Tecumseh pool. So, we have a long standing relationship."

Bradley said the YMCA has experience delivering camps and recreation programs across the province, so it makes sense.

"The good thing about dealing with the Y is they commit to financially assist any family that can not come up with the money and that's been their long standing tradition," said Bradley. "So, that is a value to us, that people that really can't afford our rates could get subsidized and have their families there."

Bradley said the property, at 2065 Blackwell Road, is a valuable city asset.

"Over the years there's [been] the odd councillor that's suggested selling it. I'd be totally opposed to that. It's a big piece of property. It has great value to the city in the long term environmentally, meeting our climate goals and it's not well known. But, I'm so glad the city has kept it in the family over the years," he said.

Council is being asked to accept the proposal and direct staff to engage in the negotiations required to complete the agreement.

Sarnia council meets in regular session at 1 p.m. on February 12 in council chambers.
