Petrolia to host RCMP Musical Ride

The equestrian skills of up to 32 cavalry will be performed in Petrolia this June.

Petrolia and Enniskillen Agricultural Society Board Chairperson Judy Krall said they've been approved to host the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride [RCMP] Musical Ride as part of the town's 150 celebrations.

She said Brigden has hosted the musical ride before, but it's the first time the event has come to Petrolia.

"Most recently I saw them at the Calgary Stampede last July," said Krall. "I'd applied [for the group to come to Petrolia] obviously at that point. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to see them there. But, to see them... it was exciting. It just made more of an adrenaline rush, hoping that they would decide to come here."

Krall said it has taken quite a lot of coordination to be added to the tour schedule.

"I mean, I'm past president of the agricultural society, so, I've done a big event. But, to do an event of this magnitude… it's a whole new ballgame," she said.

Police officers in the troop and their horses perform intricate formations and drills set to music, lasting about 30 minutes.

"I don't think people realize the history of the horses that they ride. For example, King Charles was gifted one of those horses not that long ago," said Krall.

In recognition of the RCMP's 150th anniversary and the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the RCMP presented Noble, a 7-year-old black mare, to His Majesty in April, 2023.

The event will be held at Greenwood Park June 15 and 16.

As for performance times and ticket sales, those details are still being sorted out.

Krall said further information will be shared by the town at a later date.

A variety of small and large-scale events will take place throughout 2024 to celebrate Petrolia's 150th anniversary.

Earlier this year, Director of Marketing, Arts, and Communications Laurissa Ellsworth announced the provincial Town Criers Competition would be held the same weekend in June.
