'Big Bob' remembered for his humor, kindness

The Sarnia-Lambton community is mourning the loss of a prominent figure in the local sports scene.

Bob Williamson passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12 at the age of 70.

In 1970, "Big Bob", as he was affectionately known, started coaching football and lacrosse in the Sarnia Minor Athletic Association.

During the 1970s, Williamson was involved in coaching and managing teams in the township and Sarnia Minor Hockey Associations.

In 1981, '82, and '83 he coached juvenile teams to North American Silver Stick Championship finals and All-Ontario finals.

He was involved with the Petrolia Jets hockey team from 1985 to 1990 and also served as league convener for the Great Lakes Jr. C hockey league.

From 1997 to 2003, he managed the Wallaceburg Lakers Jr. C hockey team. He was also involved in fastball in Sarnia for 21 years as a coach and manager.

Williamson managed clubs in the Lambton Jr. Sting AAA program from 2003 to 2006.

In 2008, Williamson became one of the owners and a director of the Sarnia Blast Hockey Club (now the Sarnia Legionnaires).

He served as general manager for several years, before retiring in 2018.

According to his obituary, Williamson was a "pillar of strength and guidance, always providing unwavering support and encouragement to his children in every aspect of their lives."

It said he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and cherished memories.

"Beyond his involvement in sports, [Williamson] was known for his infectious sense of humor and his fondness for playing tricks on everyone around him," read the notice. "His big laugh could light up a room, bringing joy to even the gloomiest of days. [Williamson] will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, the hockey community, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him."

Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line in Sarnia, on Monday, February 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

A funeral service to celebrate Williamson’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 20 at 11 a.m. with interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
