City council to consider more improvements at Tecumseh Park

Residents will notice some more changes in the Tecumseh Park area if city council endorses recommendations Monday.

Pedestrian enhancements and traffic calming measures are recommended adjacent to the park, as is a speed limit reduction to 40 kilometres per hour on Russell and Palmerson Streets.

Mayor Mike Bradley said increased use of the park is a good problem to have.

"It's the focus of a lot of activities in the community and it's going to continue to grow," said Bradley. "So, it makes a lot of sense to look at traffic calming and other pedestrian enhancements in that area that will protect the public when they're using this park."

A 50 km/h speed limit is currently posted for the roads adjacent to Tecumseh Park, though a community safety zone on Russell Street extends to the intersection of Russell and Ontario Streets.

Council is also being asked to award a nearly $860,000 tender, to Titan Group Construction Inc., to redevelop the baseball diamond.

"There's been a lot of money put into Tecumseh Park over the last number of years, starting with Mrs. Cox and her investment," he said. "Renewal by the city in the last couple of years, you've got the skate park there, you've got Tecumseh Pool, the splash pads, and now the restoration of the ball diamond, which is the most active one in the city and it will be a true jewel of the park system when it is completed."

The baseball diamond will receive a new backstop, fencing and a new LED field lighting system.

Drainage and irrigation is also a significant part of the project, which will see the field receive a new clay diamond surface and sod once underground work is complete.
