The Bluewater Anglers' popular hatchery open house is taking place this weekend, and residents can get a firsthand look at how things are run.
It's set for Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the facility just north of the Blue Water Bridge.
Club members and the public are invited to see how the club raises chinook salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout for release into the upper St. Clair River and lower Lake Huron.
Director Ross Bishop said this is the future fish stock for the local waters.
"The open house lets people come in, and we'll have staff there to guide them around and explain the types of fish we have and how we start the fish from an egg up until the time we release them," said Bishop. "There are about 90,000 salmon, 100,000 brown trout, and then some domestic rainbow trout that we'll put in the hatchery pond for the kids to feed."
Bishop noted the fish aren't released into the lake until the temperature comes up to about 10 C or 51 F.
He said they also have some salmon that the students from local schools have been raising.
"It's been great, the kids have really been enjoying it and taking to raising the fish," he said.
Bishop said hot dogs and pop will be available for purchase, and there is a door prize up for grabs.
