Habitat for Humanity Sarnia/Lambton will soon begin accepting applications as plans progress for their tiny home project in the city's south end.
CEO David Waters said they're in the "pre-development stage" at this point with shovels expected to be in the ground by May 2025.
Five affordable housing units will be built at 236 Christina St. S., which is located between Talfourd Street and Devine Street in Sarnia. Waters said the tiny homes will be roughly 350-square-feet and developed in a row housing style.
Waters said they're excited to see the project move forward.
"It's something new and different and something that can really help," he said.
Community members will be able to learn more about the project during public information sessions being held on Thursday at the Sunbridge Convention Centre at Four Points by Sheraton in Point Edward.
The information sessions will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
"We're actually going to set up the model of the tiny home in the banquet hall so we're going to have the actual dimensions set up in a room so people can walk in," Waters said. "We'll have some furniture in there so they can really get a feel for what it would be like to move around in the space. There will be pictures of the project, of the inside, as well as the grounds."
Applications will be available at the information sessions. Waters also said information about Habitat for Humanity's mortgage program will be available.
For those unable to attend Thursday's forum, Waters said applications will be available on their website as of Friday morning. He said prospective applicants can also visit the ReStore or email the organization directly.
"We're anticipating about 200 to 250 applicants based on the numbers we got when we did the senior project on Guthrie Drive... for those five units we actually had 350 applications," he said. "We know the need is high and these will be very affordable homeownership units so we're going to anticipate a lot [of applications] and we're going to process them right away until we've got five solid candidates."
