TVO series shines spotlight on Sarnia

Sarnia will be featured in a TVO original series called "Crossroads: Beyond Boom and Bust" as the episode focuses on the city's petrochemical industry and the push for cleaner energy.

Alibi Entertainment Vice President and Executive Producer Joanne Virgo said the show is about to showcase its second season, and each episode shares stories from different towns and cities in Ontario.

"I think Sarnia is one of the largest cities that we feature this season and it certainly has a massive story to tell, and we got lots of help from local people in telling that story," Virgo said.

The episode includes an interview with Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley who spoke about the city's history.

"So we take a look at the very beginning of Sarnia as we know it. From the discovery of oil, through the Imperial Oil plant, to the rubber plant, up to Esso shutting down lots of the stations, and then the unions that were made in order to keep people in work as much as possible," she said. "We cover the Line 5 conversations."

Virgo said they also spoke with Joanne Rogers, former chief of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, about the impacts the petrochemical industry has had on the community.

"Then we started to look quite a lot into clean energy development and how Sarnia is trying to transition from fossil fuels and into cleaner, more sustainable biofuels," she said.

Virgo said with each project, they spend about six months conducting research and speaking to as many residents as possible.

"We then try to narrow it down to people who will actually be on camera, but that's not to say that everyone who we speak with isn't a huge part of building the story that you see on television," Virgo said. "When we actually came to film, we filmed for five days. So once we get one site, it's very specific as to what storylines we're following, who we're talking to for what, and how the episode is going to piece together."

Virgo said the editing process takes about eight weeks to narrow the footage down to roughly 50 minutes.

The second season of Crossroads: Beyond Boom and Bust will include six episodes, and the first will be shown on March 26 at 9 p.m. The six episodes will also be streamed on YouTube, the TVO Today Smart TV app, or TVO.org.

Sarnia will be featured in the second episode, which will air on Tuesday, April 9 at 9 p.m.

Other nearby regions featured during the show's first season include Stratford and North Buxton.
