Sting sign second overall pick Di Iorio to OHL agreement

The Sarnia Sting have signed right winger Alessandro Di Iorio to an Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Scholarship and Development Agreement.

The 16-year-old Vaughan, ON native was chosen 2nd overall in this year's draft from the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA team.

Di Iorio tallied 20 goals and 12 assists in 27 games played in addition to four goals and two assists through seven games at the OHL Cup.

He also represented Canada at the Youth Olympics, recording six goals and an assist in just four games.

Sting General Manager Dylan Seca said it's a huge day for the organization.

"Alessandro is a player our scouts and staff believe has the ability to be a corner stone player for this organization," said Seca. "There will be no pressure, he is a player that we know will put the work in, he’s a leader, a great team guy, he’s as complete a player there is in this draft class. We welcome Alessandro and the Di Iorio family to Sarnia."

Di Iorio and the rest of the 2024 draft class are in town this weekend for the Sting's development camp.

On Friday, players will report for registration and a full day of private team activities including fitness testing, team building, and breakout sessions.

On Saturday, fans will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the prospects as the Sting will hold a pair of on-ice sessions at Pat Stapleton Arena between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
