Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council has formalized its previous decision to declare the Victoria Street parking lot surplus.

Staff have been directed to initiate the transfer and disposition of land process, and donate the whole property to the County of Lambton for affordable housing projects.

City council added a condition, asking the county to demonstrate progress within one year.

The city is also requesting the county to consider public parking as part of their proposed development at the lot, located just east of Christina Street between Cromwell and Davis Streets.

Sarnia council has referred proposed exterior enhancements at Sarnia Library to the 2025 capital budget process.

An outdoor programming space with furniture and recreation stations is proposed for visitors.

Decorative security fencing around the existing overhang, lighting and accessibility upgrades, and emergency exit improvements are also proposed.

The project has been estimated to cost $800,000.

The City of Sarnia's crossing guard program is making a positive impact.

Council approved the continuation of the program on Monday, and signed off on hiring one full time employee in engineering and one student position in human resources to support the in-house program.

The city took over the service for the 2023-2024 school year as a trial period.

Of the nearly 90 people who participated in a survey in February, 95.5 per cent supported the city providing the service.

Sarnia council has accepted a nearly $78,000 bid to create a master plan for the Norm Perry Memorial Park.

Staff said advancing an overall master plan will be beneficial in creating a plan to continue to meet the community's recreation and sporting needs in the future.

During the 2023 season, over 1,000 hours of use were logged at the park's facilities.

The background analysis and review work is expected to start this month, and community engagement will be done into June.

It's hoped a final plan could be ready before the end of the year.
