LCBO workers vote overwhelmingly in favour of strike

LCBO workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of going on strike on Saturday.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) said 97% of its members have voted in favour of job action.

It is calling this a record vote as 8,060 LBCO voted over the course of four days.

"This record turnout will be a strong message to Doug Ford and the LCBO that we aren't backing down in this fight. We're fighting for a strong future at the LCBO," said Chair Colleen MacLeod.

In a post to social media, OPSEU said it will be returning to the bargaining table this week.

"So far the LCBO has refused to bargain. Now we'll tell them and Doug Ford exactly what they need to avoid strike action," she said.

The strike vote comes in the wake of the Ford government's announcement earlier this year that beer and wine will be sold in convenience stores.

OPSEU delivered a bargaining notice in January before their contract expired in March.

The union said an important update will be given Monday evening on bargaining and a strike deadline.

OPSEU represents over 10,000 employees across the province.
