City council applauds 'Sarnia War Remembrance Sign Project'

Sarnia council is applauding a group of volunteers for a project that will honour fallen veterans this fall.

The "Sarnia War Remembrance Sign Project: Where They Lived" will see signs placed on the boulevards of the addresses where fallen soldiers from Sarnia once lived for 11 days in November.

City Councillor Adam Kilner said he felt "incredibly proud" after he was shown some of the signs recently.

"We were quite amazed by the design, the access to QR codes," Kilner said. "I think it's a really progressive way of memorializing our local veterans."

Councillor Anne Marie Gillis thinks the signs will be welcomed and appreciated when they're installed.

"By creating these smaller signs and putting them in locations where houses were -- where veterans lived, and grew up, and enjoyed what everyone else enjoys, and their lives were cut short -- it's interesting to see that there's so many people who are unaware that their home was home to these people," said Gillis.

She commended Doug Woods, Tom Slater and Tom St. Amand for their work on the project.

"It's a wonderful project. The volunteers that have done it have put a lot of time into it and it's going to be spectacular [when it runs] from November 1 to November 12," Gillis said.

Through research, the group confirmed the addresses of approximately 240 fallen soldiers.

Each sign will feature a photo of the soldier -- if it's available -- their name, age, address, the war they served in, and where they were buried.

As highlighted by Kilner, the signs will include QR codes that send people to a website with information about every soldier and each sign location pinpointed on an electronic map.
