UPDATE: Sarnia Fire and Rescue assist in Port Huron warehouse fire

Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded stateside Sunday to assist with a large warehouse fire in Port Huron.

Firefighters worked through the night tackling the stubborn fire at US Farathane near 24th Street and Beard Streets in Port Huron's Industrial Park.

Sarnia firefighters were on-call, backfilling Station No. 1 with an engine company and platoon chief to supplement call-in Port Huron Fire Department (PHFD) crews.

As of early Monday morning, the PHFD said an excavator had removed portions of the exterior metal cladding, allowing better access. Significant pockets of heavy fire remained due to burning plastic combustibles, as well as collapsed portions of roof decking.

The cause of the blaze, which broke out at about 11 a.m. Sunday, is under investigation by the Port Huron Fire Marshal’s Office.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was called to the scene and is monitoring the air quality at eight locations.

The PHFD said occasional increases in smoke conditions may develop until the final overhaul is complete.

PHFD also said fire suppression efforts will continue throughout the day and into the nighttime hours on Monday.
