A new food truck is hoping to set up shop in the Village of Point Edward.
Point Edward council approved in principle a proposal by Blue Water Gourmet Food Catering Inc. to operate a food truck site for the remainder of this season and next year, pending a final review regarding safe placement and electrical connection.
CAO Jim Burns said the current available site wouldn't work for the operation, and they've asked the village to move the concrete pad and electrical hook up.
The proposal, originally we wanted it to go in that second space that's near the playground equipment but they were told the fire department specifically was not supportive of that from having propane setup that close to the equipment," said Burns. "So, the proposal has asked that we move it away from the playground equipment, closer to the existing truck."
Deputy Mayor Greg Grimes said it's a worthy venture.
"I think by investing in a pad and power, we're going to get a return on investment in subsequent years," said Grimes. "I'd like to see them sign the contract for next year for sure, and then if this year doesn't happen, they're locked in to next year. Because I think investing money in the pad and power is a good investment because if this deal falls apart, somebody else might come along. So, I think turning it back to staff with those details and get it firmed up, and then move on it as fast as possible."
As part of the contract agreement, Blue Water Gourmet Food Catering Inc. will sell only Indian food and will not be in direct competition with the existing chip trucks.
Mayor Bev Hand welcomed the proposal.
"I was excited with the proposal, because they came forward and we've been talking about it for a couple of years," said Hand. "This is a brand new truck that they've put together to try this business and it's so different from fries I think they can do really well. I think there's a market down there for something different."
Blue Water Gourmet Food Catering Inc. will also have to pay for and acquire the necessary food truck license from the Village of Point Edward, and meet all the requirements of the Point Edward Fire Department and Lambton Public Health.
