Damage estimated at $500K in apartment fire

All tenants of a central Sarnia apartment building have been temporarily displaced following a weekend fire.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded to a blaze at a three-storey building at London Road and East Street at around 6:15 a.m.

While the fire damage was contained to the first floor unit, smoke travelled throughout the building.

Fire officials said the cause has been deemed accidental and damage is estimated at $500,000.

No injuries were reported, however a cat did die in the blaze.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue said the Sarnia-Lambton Canadian Red Cross is assisting affected tenants at this time, and the property owner is making arrangements to allow for access for necessities.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
